Counterintelligence-grade deception detection

How To Spot
A Liar.

You're not bad at catching liars. You were taught the wrong method. Watching for shifty eyes and fidgeting works about as well as a coin flip. This is the active, evidence-based system intelligence work actually uses — the S.P.O.T. Method™.

Pattern interrupt

3 myths that make you worse at this.

Every "body language reveals lies" guru sells you these. The research has been quietly burying them for 20 years. Unlearn them first — they actively poison your judgment.

MYTH 01

"Liars avoid eye contact."

Gaze aversion, fidgeting, throat-clearing — the classics.

Reality: these signal discomfort, not deception. Practiced liars often hold more eye contact. You're reading nerves and mistaking them for guilt — and innocent nervous people pay the price.
Source: DePaulo et al. 2003 · Navarro
MYTH 02

"Micro-expressions catch liars."

The "Lie to Me" fantasy — a flicker on the face exposes the lie.

Reality: micro-expressions can be masked, faked, or simply absent in low-stakes lies. They reveal an emotion, never the lie itself. Built a verdict on a twitch? You built it on sand.
Source: Burgoon; Hartwig & Bond 2011
MYTH 03

"Experience makes you a lie detector."

Cops, agents, judges — surely they can just tell.

Reality: professionals score no better than the public on passive observation — but with over-confidence, which is worse. The edge isn't a gut. It's a method.

Who this is built for

Read anyone. Anywhere.

The negotiator who needs to know if "that's our final number" is real
The hiring manager tired of polished candidates who flame out
The dater who's done being gaslit and wants their instincts back
The parent who can feel "nothing's wrong" is a wall, not an answer
The poker player hunting a real edge, not folklore tells
Anyone who's been burned once and swore: never again, not blind
The proprietary system

The S.P.O.T. Method™

Four moves, in order. It's not a checklist of tells — it's how you manufacture the difference between a truth-teller and a liar, then read it. Lying is harder mental work than telling the truth. S.P.O.T. weaponizes that.

S
Scan the baseline

Know "normal" before you hunt for weird.

There's no universal tell — only deviation. Get them talking about something safe and true first. How fast do they speak? How much detail? How do they sit when relaxed? That's your reference line. You can't spot a spike without a flatline.

Comedy memory hookYou can't tell a plot twist if you slept through the whole movie. Watch the boring first act on purpose.
P
Provoke cognitive load

Make lying expensive.

A truthful brain just remembers. A lying brain has to invent, track the story, and monitor your face — all at once. So you tax it: ask for the story in reverse order. Ask the unexpected detail they didn't rehearse ("who paid?", "what was to your left?"). Ask for more. Watch the trace spike.

Comedy memory hookTruth is a recording — hit rewind, no problem. A lie is improv jazz — ask for it backwards and the band falls apart.
O
Observe clusters, not tells

One signal is noise. A cluster is a question.

Never convict on a single gesture. Watch for several changes that hit together, right when you applied pressure, and that deviate from baseline. And remember the operative's mantra: you are an issue detector, not a lie detector. A cluster means "something's here" — it tells you where to dig, never the verdict.

Comedy memory hookOne raindrop isn't a storm. Don't evacuate the beach because somebody blinked.
T
Test against evidence

Let them commit. Then spring the trap.

The single biggest accuracy jump in the science: Strategic Use of Evidence. Don't reveal what you know. Ask open questions, let them lock in a full story, then compare it to the facts you held back. Truth-tellers stay consistent. Liars contradict the evidence they didn't know you had. Trained interviewers hit 85% this way.

Comedy memory hookDon't show your cards. Let them bet the farm on a bluff — then turn over the ace you were sitting on.
The arsenal · 6 live tools

Train it. Then run it for real.

Most books leave you with theory. This is a working instrument. Every tool below maps to a letter of S.P.O.T. — and runs right here in your pocket.

TOOL 01 · maps to “T”

Statement Analyzer

Paste any statement — a text, an alibi, an excuse. It scans for the verbal markers science actually links to deception: detail density, hedging, distancing, and rehearsed smoothness. Returns where to probe, never a verdict.

TOOL 02 · maps to “P”

Unexpected-Question Generator

Give the claim. It builds the load-inducing questions a rehearsed liar can't have prepped — spatial, temporal, reverse-order, and the "devil's advocate" probe. This is cognitive load, weaponized.

TOOL 03 · maps to “S”

Baseline Builder

Before you read anyone, calibrate. Log how they behave while telling a known truth across five dimensions. Now you're hunting deviation, not folklore.

TOOL 04 · maps to “S+P+O+T”

S.P.O.T. Drill Simulator

A scenario drops. A subject gives a statement. You decide: truth or deception — and why. Instant scoring, instant coaching. This is the rep that builds the instinct.

TOOL 06 · maps to “O”

Live Cluster Tracker

In a real conversation, tap what you observe. It counts the cluster and — crucially — keeps you honest: this flags issues to investigate, not guilt.

The objection killer

Why this is 1000× better.

There are three famous names in this space. Each one is real — and each one will leave you reading the wrong thing. Tap to see exactly where they break, and why the S.P.O.T. Method wins.

vs. Ekman & "micro-expressions"

Their method

Stare at the face for a 1/25-second flicker. Decode it into emotion. Infer a lie. (The "Lie to Me" model.)

S.P.O.T.

A flicker is an emotion — and emotions can be faked, masked, or absent. We don't read the face for guilt; we tax the mind and test the story. Mental load and contradiction don't lie even when the face does.

vs. Navarro & body language

Their method

Read 200+ discomfort signals — pacifying, blocking, feet pointing to exits. Genuinely sharp work, and we honor it.

S.P.O.T.

Even Navarro says it himself: body language detects discomfort, not deception — you become an "issue detector." We agree, and go further: we give you the verbal + evidence layer that turns "something's off" into a tested answer.

vs. poker "tells" (Caro, etc.)

Their method

Memorize a felt-table catalog: chip-glancing, fake sighs, strong-means-weak. Brilliant — for one green table, against opponents acting on purpose.

S.P.O.T.

Folklore tells are table-specific and easily reversed. S.P.O.T. is a transferable system — it works in the boardroom, the kitchen, and the interrogation room, because it's built on how the brain handles a lie, not on one room's customs.

THE VERDICT

Passive watching = 54%. Active method = up to 85%.

Every competitor trains you to watch and guess. S.P.O.T. trains you to act and test. That's not a tweak — it's the entire difference between folklore and tradecraft.
Your unfair advantage → income

Turn "I can read people" into $500–$2,000/mo.

A person who can read the room is the person who closes the deal, wins the negotiation, and never gets played. This skill isn't a parlor trick — it's leverage. Here's the path the full version maps out for you:

CuongFBI — "Mr How To…"

Former FBI · National Security & Counterintelligence

At eleven, I ran from Vietnam to give nine siblings and two parents a chance — three months in a Malaysian refugee camp, then U.S. foster care. I worked three jobs, earned my degree from Carlson / University of Minnesota, and spent a decade in FBI national-security and counterintelligence, where reading people wasn't a party trick — it was the job. Twenty years later, I'd brought my entire family to America. I don't teach folklore. I teach what actually held up when the stakes were real.

May you always be loving, laughing & living your life to the fullest. 🕊️
